Hi, I’m Joanie. I’m a writer based in Liverpool, UK.

North + West is where the many strands of my life collide and I write about the three things that make me feel like I am alive – food, culture and travel.

Cooking has been part of my life since I was old enough to be able to climb up on a chair and help to stir a pot or knead dough. Since then, my travels have influenced how I approach food, cooking and writing. I’ve found myself in the kitchens and communal ovens of Moroccan Berbers in the Sahara and I’ve squatted on the floor over a fire in the kitchen of a leprosy colony in India set up by Gandhi and learned to make chapattis.

In a previous life, I was a theatre designer. I made work for theatre and dance companies for both site specific and venue based productions and also made site based work with an artist collective. My love for culture has never left and at weekends, you can find me in a gallery somewhere in Liverpool.
